Hypnotherapy For Weight Loss?
Something About “Mary”

Losing weight can be a challenging task, wanting to lose it and failing is devastating. Part of our mind seems to always find excuses to have that “last” snack, that “last” piece of chocolate, that “last” naughty bit; doesn’t it? Here is a case history that shows exactly how hypnotherapy can make a massive difference for people wanting to lose weight.

I have worked with a lovely lady who was determined to lose weight, we will call her Mary here (not her real name). She is 64 and she had to lose 7 stone. I can hear you going “whhhhhhat??!!” This was actually not an issue for me, nor was it for her as she was realistic with regards to the time that it would take to reach that goal.

The challenging part was that apart from being 64 years old, as not all people are motivated to do exercise at that age, a few years ago she had a heart transplant and before then she went through chemotherapy. These factors combined were more than enough to suggest that during the hypnotherapy session I would not have done any work on motivation to exercise whatsoever.

So, all I had left was to “reprogram” her mind to dislike some of the “bad” food she was eating, erase and replace the emotional eating triggers which started after her son passed away in a car accident, replace the habit of snacking with healthier and more rewarding behaviours and slightly accelerate her metabolism so to burn more calories.

This was a challenging client for me. I have worked with many people with issues such as phobias, stress, anxiety and addictions. The list is endless, yet this was one of my most challenging. As always I have created a session tailored to her personality, to her issues specifically. The session included a combination of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Time Line Therapy and Hypnosis.

I have stretched the session to 2 hours (normally sessions are 75 minutes tops) and done all I could to help Mary. Losing weight would have meant so much more than looking better and feeling healthier. It would have meant that Mary could finally cope with the loss of her son, she could regain confidence in herself, build her self esteem, begin to leave the house more and meet her friends more. It would have meant getting her life back. I always take each and every client very seriously, I want to use Hypnotherapy to help people and I take responsibility each and every time I take a new client.

Well, after one week here is what she wrote: “Hello Luca Thank you for the email, I have waited to reply, I wanted to have a full week. I feel good, no eating between meals, and no sandwiches. I don't miss the bread at all, if my scales are right I have lost 4lbs. this week so I am very pleased”.

She has lost 4lbs per week since then. This is what makes my job so wonderful.

Headache? Try the “HypnoPill”
Can hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) take your headache away? Can they take your back pain away? Can they make your stomach cramps disappear? Can they really?

I was in Cambridge town centre only a few days ago. I went out with one of my dearest friends who is also a hypnotherapist in Cambridge.

As we stood just outside a popular bar, we bumped into a girl I knew which we will call Mary (not her real name) and began the usual “hi, long time no see” kind of conversation.

Mary soon introduced us to her friend Barbara (again, not her real name) who in between “nice to meet you” and “how’s your evening so far” mentioned that she had a terrible headache.

My friend Joseph asked her: “Where is your headache?” and she pointed it to her forehead, then Joe continued “What colour is it?” a question which made Barbara rather confused.

As she goes to answer, Joe was interrupted by Mary, who obviously could no longer follow this unusual conversation and could not see where this was going.

I then moved my attention to Barbara, who was probably still a little mesmerised, and continued the “therapeutic” work started by Joe. I began from showing the good intention to take Barbara’s confusion away and make some sense of the rather unusual questioning as well as “installing” some expectations.

It was something along these lines:

Me- handing my business card: “Relax Barbara, we are hypnotherapist here in Cambridge. So tell me... where did you say your headache was?”

Barbara: “I thought that hypnotherapy was weight loss, stop smoking, phobias and things like that?”

Me: “Well, let’s see...”

Barbara pointing at her forehead: “Right here, it goes all the way across”

Me - grabbing Barbara’s right arm by the wrist and moving it to her right with my left hand while gently running my right hand index finger across her forehead: “It was right here you said, was it?”

Barbara - looking even more confused now: “Yes, right there”

Me: “So... before we let go now, what colour is it?”

Barbara: “What?

Me: “Colour; let go and trust the first that comes up, what colour was it?”

Barbara - looking spaced: “Pink, it’s pink”

Me - clicking my right hand fingers and gently touching the middle of her forehead with my left index finger: “Gone, it’s gone...”

and before I could continue to finish this “session” she opens her eyes widely and begins almost screaming:

“It’s gone!! It’s gone!! Mary, Mary!!! My headache is gone... you guys are weird! Who are you?!! It’s gone! I had it for 3 day, 3 days and now it’s totally gone!!”

As Hypnotherapists, in therapy room we always follow our code of practice and do anything to make the greatest positive changes in people, we have a big love for helping people.

Equally, it is important to respect the “code of good fun” in social environments and take some satisfaction in just looking cool and a little mysterious; for this reason, we politely said bye and left the two girls with many questions and not many answers.

Having kept my business card, Barbara texted me the next day telling me that her headache went and never came back.

Now, let’s look at this “headache Hypnopill” from a sceptic angle; was there any magic in what we did? No!

Was there a specific technique in what with did? Again no.
Was the colour of Barbara’s headache important for the success of the technique? In no way as there was no technique.

Was there a special healing energy in my finger, touch or words? No of course.
Was there a special energy in the whole thing? Absolutely, a great positive energy.

Was Barbara’s headache really pink? It was for her.

So how can this have worked without special healing powers or techniques? Was Barbara pretending that her headache was gone?

Barbara was not pretending, the headache was really gone.

We are hypnotists and N Language exPerts, people who use language to help people’s minds and that is what we have done. My hypnotherapy clinic in Cambridge is my passion as it allows me to help people as part of my occupation.

Of course there is no such thing as a pink headache, there was however a pink headache for Barbara, for others it may have been green, black, red, or with no colour.

Was Barbara’s headache psychosomatic? I don’t personally think so but truth is that we don’t know.

Was it caused by stress? Maybe but again we do not know.

The only thing that we know for sure and that really matters is that the headache has disappeared. Barbara felt better, her evening was more enjoyable and so was the day after and probably the whole week.

Here is the real question for you now, if you will...
Barbara’s headache was gone and that’s really it, what else could be important when you had a headache that you no longer have?

Do You Have a Goal?
Learn how to make it come to you

I guess you have a goal; something you want to be, have or do. We all have that something that we would like to be, to have or to do but most of the time those goals seem too big; thoughts like “there is no way I can get this...”, “I wish I could...”, "I am not good enough" or “if only I could...” seem to occupy our mind and govern the way we behave and consequently limit our potential. So we make ourselves “happy” and accept that those goals are simply too big.

We only dream of achieving them.  Often we tend to believe we could not actually get those things we really want and therefore we don’t take any action. We just sit there dreaming and blaming life and commiserating ourselves. The rich and successful are either lucky or one of a kind.

Well, now is time to think again. We can get anything we want if we just want it badly enough; although this may seem controversial at first, stick with me and it will all make sense to you sooner than you think, okay?

Some people call it the Law of Attraction, some people call it positive thinking and many others came up with many different names for it. I like the concept of the Law of Attraction but we will call it The Energy here so that nobody will be chasing us with law suits for stealing the name.

I could begin from the very beginning but I will not, if I did this article will become your friend or enemy for an entire year.  There are many books talking about the Law of Attraction. In essence The Energy states that if we desire something strongly and follow determined techniques, we can influence the universe to cause events that will make our goals almost magically manifest themselves. “CRAZY!!!” I hear you go. Well maybe, but I wonder what it would be like for you, I wonder what difference would it make to you, I wonder what would it mean to you if this was not so “CRAZY!!!” and was actually all true?

What would it mean to you? Take a moment to really think about this... What would it be like for you if this was really true?

The way I see and live The Energy is, in very simple terms, creating a goal with a very structured and precise methodology.  Here below you will see the Goal Setting structure and after that you will see what The Energy suggests you do so to influence the Universe to cause this goals to “come” to us.

Structure of a Goal

Stated in the positive
A well formed goal must be stated in the positive. This means moving toward something, not away from something, have something you want as opposed to not having something you don’t want, to be the person that you want to be and not to not be the person you do not want to be. An example of a goal stated in the positive is “I am with Mr Right Now and I am happy” and not “I am not alone anymore...”

Measurable
When will you know you got it? If you state that you want more money, when will you know when you achieve “more”? Your goal must be measurable and to be measurable it must be a precise goal. “I now have £124,000.oo in my bank account” is stated in positive and measurable as you will know that you have your goal when your bank account reads £124,000.00CR However this is NOT enough. You need a date. You need to know when you want it by or else you may still get it but you may get it when you are 99 years of age and, in this case, I am sure you would agree that this may not be so useful , would you not?
Have you ever heard people saying things like: “I will do it next month”, “I will do it later”, “I will get it soon”. “It is now the 20th April 2010 and I now have £124,000.00 in my bank account” is stated in the positive and is measurable.

Realistic
This is an important point; the goal must be realistic and yet ambitious. For example if you stated that you want to go to the Moon by April 2010 and you don’t have any form of knowledge or experience in the subject you may achieve this goal however, the chances that you will actually do it are slim. This is because there are factors that not even the universe can control within that time length. You need the adequate level of fitness, training, knowledge, background etc. This is different if you are somehow already involved in the Astronautic environment.

That said, you must think big! Have big ambitions. If you have no money at all now and your goal is that of having £1 million by April 2010, you could achieve it as there is no logical barrier which cannot be influenced by the right attitude, energy and efforts.

If I told you that Luke moved to a new country where the language spoken was completely and utterly unknown to him and so was the culture and national law and that after only 3 years he had 3 successful businesses, a house located in the centre of town, mastered the language and began teaching his subject of interest to people native of that nation you would not probably believe it. Would you?

Look at TV shows like The X Factor and American Idol. The contestant who wins becomes a star, rich and famous in only a few weeks. The Energy can influence the universe so to cause events that can literally change our lives in most areas. So think big but perhaps if you haven’t even seen a space shuttle before, leave the Moon alone.

Timely
See Measurable.

This is the basic structure which is used by most knowledgeable business people. However, in order to make it more favourable, it is important to apply the following steps:

Write your goals down, always!

Your goal must be self initiated and self maintained by you.
Be selfish! This goal must benefit you directly before it benefits any other individual. If your goal will cause other people to benefit from it, that’s great, however you must create this goal for you.

What prevents you from achieving that goal now?
If your goal is that of publishing a book, you may find that what prevents you may be not having any idea on what to write, not having written a single ward of the book, not knowing any publisher, not having the money etc. This alone will give you many answers and directions. You may be very pleasantly surprised by what you may find.

What will happen if you get your goal?
What will change in your life, your circle of friends and family? Be specific as this process will help you realise whether you are happy with the changes that will occur and whether you really want those changes to happen.

What will not happen if you get it?
And the way I see this is that you should write both positive and negative things. For example, if your goal was to become a famous rock star, one of the answers to this question may be that you will not be short of money, you will not have to work in that shop anymore, you will not have to struggle to find the time to play, you will not have the privacy you now have anymore, you will not see your current friends and family as often anymore etc.

What will happen if you don’t get it?
In the rock star example above the answer could be that you will have gained an experience in trying to achieve it, you will have the knowledge of what is involved to become a famous rock star, you may have to find another job, you will have learned something new etc..

What will not happen if you don’t get it?
You will not have to move to the US, you will not have to hide from paparazzi, you will not be able to play the guitar all that much etc.

Can you act as if you have it now?
Can you pretend that you have it now? Pretend that you have your goal now, take charge of your thoughts by knowing that you already have it; because you do really, it's on its way. By doing so, you will influence the universe even more.

Put your goal into your future!
That’s right; make it happen by “programming” your future. Okay, for this we must play a game so that you really get the sense of this right now, wont you?

So, if I was to ask you to show me in which direction your time travels, I have the impression that you may say that it goes from back to front, left to right, down to up or any other direction. It may go through you, above you, in front of you, behind you or beside you; right? “WHAAT???!!!” I hear some of you say. It is actually very easy, think of your past right now, think of last Christmas. Good, you will notice that the memory of last Christmas comes from somewhere, behind you, from your left or from another direction. Now, think of your future, if you were to point your finger toward your future where would you point?

If you are like most people, your time probably runs from your past to your future forming a line. If not,  than relax, nothing to worry about, just give us a call and we will be happy to help you find your Time Line

Now, in order to play this game, you need to make yourself comfortable and I suggest that you record yourself reading the next few lines and then plug the headphones in and take a trip with me right now... would you?

So I assume that you know where your past is and where your future is. In a moment, I am going to ask you to take a deep breath in through the nose; not yet though. First, I want you to imagine that as you breathe in you are breathing in a calming, relaxing feeling which fills up your whole body with tranquillity and relaxation. Then as you breathe out, push out any tension from your body, any tension from your muscles, feel each and every muscle relaxing as you breathe out.

So go ahead now and take a deep, deep breath in through the nose and feel that calming feeling filling your body with relaxation.  And now as you exhale feel your body relaxing from the top of your head all the way down to the tip of your toes. Good!

Now come with me, we’ll take a journey together. Take another deep breath in and as you breathe out think of that goal you have; imagine seeing a clear picture of you having achieved that outcome. Imagine seeing yourself in that picture having that goal now.

Imagine seeing the things you would see as you have achieved that goal, imagine hearing the things you would hear and imagine those feelings of having achieved that goal right now; feel those wonderful feelings now. Make the colours of that picture bright, but not too bright, the sounds loud and clear but not too loud, just right you know, so that the picture looks the most real to you.

Once you have it, imagine holding that picture in your hands, with a nice frame around it. Now take another deep breath in and as you breathe out just float all the way up in the air, that’s right, float all the way up in the air above your time line, all the way up in the air, high, high, high up in the air.

Now float all the way into your future, right above the moment on which you have prefixed yourself to have that goal, right above that moment. As you get there, holding that picture in your hands, stop once you get there and stay up in the air still holding that picture. Great job! You are doing great.

Now, in a moment I will ask you to take three deep breaths, not now but in a moment; and as you exhale each time I want you to blow that positive energy into that picture, that’s right, blow into that picture and as you do feel that picture absorbing energy and becoming strangely warmer and heavier, warmer and heavier.
So go ahead now and take the first deep breath and as you exhale feel that picture absorbing that positive energy and becoming warmer and heavier; good.

And the second breath now, even deeper than the first, but not as deep as the next to come; and as you blow into that picture feel it becoming hot and heavy, hot and heavy; great.

And now the last breath, the deepest one of all, in through the nose and... let it out feeling that picture burning hot and as heavy as a massive rock, that’s right, as heavy as a massive rock.

Now let go of that picture, let it gently float down into your time line, right into the moment in your future when you want that goal. Let it float down and watch it as it gently places itself into your time line, into your future.

Excellent, you are really doing great. Now, with your super energised picture right into your future, turn around facing toward now and notice how all the events from that moment back to now begin to re-evaluate themselves, how they begin to rearrange themselves and change now.

Now, slowly float back to now and as you do notice your time line becoming brighter and brighter, notice how the events between your future and now fully support the accomplishment of your goal and you may also notice something rather revealing on your way back; maybe a new learning, maybe many new learnings, it really doesn’t matter as your goal is now in your future and your subconscious mind can provide you with the right directions and answers so that you get your goal right when you know you will. And when you are ready, come back to now and float back into your body and ask yourself:

How do you feel about that goal now?
Will you get it now?

Follow these simple steps and your chances to get what you want will increase in a dramatic way, for the positive.

Where are You now?
The power of focus and how to use it to get to your goal now.

It is imperative that we know where we want to go but I am sure you would agree that it is just as important to know you where we are now.

This will enable us to calibrate and measure our progress. As when stating your goal it is important to be specific, it is just as important when analysing where you are now. As in the Goal Settings, this must be stated in the positive; this is called Gratitude.

As with The Energy (see Goal Settings), you can influence the universe to cause events that will give you what you want, Gratitude helps you receive more of what you have; in fact, all thoughts are really requests for more of the same, in good and in bad.

This is mainly because of the fact that our brain is not able to process negatives; here is an example: Try really, really hard not to think of a pink house, don’t think of a pink house. Now, what are you thinking about?  Don’s say a pink house! ;-)

In order for our brain to keep from thinking about something, it needs to think about it first, then decide or remember that it does not want to think about it and either change one or more elements of that something or think  about something else instead. So, what does this say? Well, I wonder what a person who keeps on thinking “I don’t want to fail, I don’t want to stay where I am” focuses on. I wonder what requests he/she is sending out; and what do you think this person is likely to receive?

The key here is to think in positive and be grateful for what we do have.
I would suggest you take 10 minutes every night or morning to write all the things you are grateful for, meaning it. Begin from the things that we give more for granted; after all, not everybody has the privilege of waking up in the morning feeling healthy, warm and with food on the table. So be grateful for those things too; don’t live anything out.

Once you have a good list of the things that you do have, for which you are grateful, then take that image of what you want to be, have or do and notice the difference. What skills does the “new you” have that you do not have now? What resources? Once you have that list of those skills, you will notice that some of these skills are simply behavioural and attitudinal. This means that the “new you” has acquired a different way of thinking, behaving and consequently a different physiology.

It helps to take charge of those things now. You may not have the final outcome yet, nothing however stops you from thinking, behaving and appearing like that “new you” right now; you can easily act as if you are that “new you” now. You could easily imagine what it would feel like being that “new you”, and you can feel those feelings now.

This will amplify that focus on that goal you have, because when you act as if you have it, you are acting as if you have it, behaving as if you have it, appearing as if you have it and thinking as if you have it.

Do you see what this does? You are focusing entirely on your goal; your thoughts are focused on it, your body is focused on it, your language is focused on it and your behaviour is focused on it.

Now, what is the most important skill in achieving something? That’s right, it’s the FOCUS. And there is no better way to focus than this as this way, without consciously realising it, you are focusing on your goal all day, every day, mind and body.

What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis: Inside and Out

This is the £1,000,000.00 question.

My favourite definition is: “Hypnosis is an altered state of mind in which you allow yourself to enter”.

Hypnosis is often used in place of harmful prescription medication to treat a wide variety of ailments. But what is hypnosis used to treat? The practice of hypnosis is called “hypnotherapy”, and is used either as a solitary treatment or in conjunction with other treatments.

Hypnotherapy is practiced by a trained licensed professional hypnotherapist.
Hypnosis is often used to treat the symptoms associated with emotional, behavioural, habitual, social, and medical issues.

Hypnosis can help people deal with:

• Labour and childbirth
• Post-op surgery bleeding and pain
• Dental treatment recovery
• Migraine headaches
• Chemotherapy nausea/vomiting
• Weak immune systems
• High blood pressure
• Skin diseases
• Asthma
• Weight loss
• Quit smoking
• Addictions
• Public speaking
• Confidence
• Dyslexia
• Relationship
• Paranoia
• Sleeping disorders
• Depression
• Anxiety disorders, stress
• Atopic and psoriasis dermatitis
• Phobias

and more

A Brief History of Hypnosis
In one form or another, hypnosis has existed since the beginning of time. For
example, animals that hibernate are practicing one type of hypnosis. They are
practicing self-hypnosis by closing down their bodies while allowing their mind
and physical being to renew.

Prior to the 1400’s, when a person was sick it was thought to be intentionally
caused by the gods as punishment to mortal man. The healers of the time would have rituals that involved an altered state of mind, either in the sick person or the healer.

Every ritual was different, but they typically involved natural remedies from the rainforest, fire, music and chanting. A common thread in these treatments is that the ill person would be trying to reach a mental place where the mind would take over the body. This would begin the process of body healing.

By believing they were being healed, the power of the mind was unleashed.
There was mention in written documentation of hypnosis as early as the 3rd
century in Egypt.

The 18th century was a popular time for hypnosis, when Franz Anton Mesmer, an Austrian doctor, found he was capable of healing people of illnesses without surgery or medicine. His studies led him to believe that the body was regulated by a magnetic force, and the use of magnets and hypnosis healed people.

This type of hypnosis was called “Mesmerism”, and was very successful.

Hypnosis: What Is It?
People tend to either fully believe in hypnosis – or they do not. Rightfully, before you can claim to not believe in hypnosis, you need to fully understand what it is, and what it is not.

There is a lot of misinformation out there on the topic of hypnosis. People think
that they have to give up all control of themselves when being hypnotized. That is not true. You retain complete control of yourself.

Hypnosis is a normal, natural state of mind that is achieved by many in everyday activities. For example, remember the last time you were engaged in a good book?

That relaxed, focused mind-body connection is similar to hypnosis. Add a
trained, professional guide that offers suggestions, and you have a snapshot of a hypnosis session.

When you are hypnotized, your mind is still in control. You remain in the hypnotized state because you want to be there. The power of your mind is being used in hypnotherapy, facilitated by the guide.

A seasoned professional can lead the trance a specific way, which is helpful when trying to pinpoint a specific problem.
